You have entered ‘Minaving’. A place where some things seem familiar but out of place and other things seem strange but fitting. Time moves slow here, so relax, listen, look around and let the scenery slowly wash over you.” Minaving is an audiovisual VR travel experience made during the MSR = HAAG SAEZ residency organized by Yoshinari Nishiki from studio TOFU.&nbsp; The concept was to connect the city of Minamisanriku to the city The Hague. The work combines video- and audiofootage of both locations into a new world with aspects of both countries and an added layer of imagination. Minamisanriku is a small town located in the North-east of Japan, traditionally known for its aquaculture. However, the place gained a sudden notoriety after the Great East Japan Earthquake with its extended area of land severely damaged by tsunamis. It has been 11 years since the catastrophe and now the place is known for its advanced environmental efforts. The many faces of the sea flow by slowly shifting from day into night and from reality over the edge into the imaginary. A sea that’s always there, ever changing. The piece is about the sound characteristics and timbre of the Dutch language. What effect do syllabes have on the feelings of the words using these syllables? I focussed on the contrast between hollow – full and sharp - soft sounding syllables. To get to words that fitted this contrast I made a scheme. In this scheme I wrote syllables and words fitting to the sound they had. Putting these words in a intuitive order it became a poem with its own story. The meaning of the poem, which only formed after I had written two thirds of the poem by intuitively combining words together, fits for me very well to the sound of the piece. The intensity of the text and meaning are shaped by the sounds that are used. Simply said it is difficult to write a warm feeling text with hollow sharp sounds while doing the opposite is similarly difficult. Next to the poem I wrote I recorded all dutch syllables and put them in a granular synthesizer which I programmed in Max MSP. In my case: when the empty space I'm sitting in is filled with my thoughts on paper. It took me three days to fill the whole space with my thoughts. Every morning I started at 9 am and ended in the early evening. On the last day I finished my writing in the afternoon. I ended up writing 130 pages of text. After the performance I made a selection of my thoughts and read them outloud recording myself and combining the footage with a timelapse of my performance. But what if you could be in someone’s memory, reliving the moment as if it happened right now. In this VR experience the past becomes the present. Submerge yourself in a mind full of memories. A mind full of sounds, images and stories once experienced by the body it inhabits. This VR experience is based upon the memories of my 87 year old neighbour. I asked him to describe and tell me about four memories that have had a big impact on his life. Click here for part two. Possible pappa’s consists of a serie of 8 portraits, audio stories and objects connected to potential men that could be my spermdonor. In the time that I was concieved spermdonors most often donated anonymous. There was no law yet forbidding anonimous donation. In my youth I often had dreams about who my donor could be, a famous star, a hobo, a boring man with a 9 to 5 office job or maybe not even a man! By combining my dreams with existing people and traits of myself I created these portraits that reflect the thought process and dreams a donorchild might have. He is a famous composer and conductor known worldwide for his new take on Gregorian chant. In his new compositions he combined sampled pop lyrics with&nbsp; a monotonous chant. During his young famous years Christof held a lot of wild bets with friends and colleagues. With a colleague conductor he made a bet about who could conduct a full concert whilst emptying a bottle of an alcoholic beverage throughout the concert. They hid the beverage from the crowd by dividing the alcoholic beverage into little bottles they were wearing around their waist. Sneakily they drank from the little bottles, well hidden beneath their clothes, after each movement in the piece. If you lost the bet you had to donate your sperm because both of them hated the idea of having children. They enjoyed their wild way of living and children didn’t fit in this lifestyle. &nbsp;Christof lost, and in this way became my donor. Years later he watches the news telling about donor children searching for their donor. Quickly turning of the tv he takes a cigarette and walks outside to his porch where the sun shines bright. He tries to focus on the cigarette and pushes away the thoughts of the children that possibly now exist because of his lost bet. Music, he thinks, I should write some new music, and walks inside where to hear the news playing on the radio, a story about the lost Donor-administration of a few big hospitals in the Netherlands. He sighs, happily. The weight of life on his shoulders seems to lift creating a vacuum for his egocentric thoughts wherein the word responsibility does not exist. He was aged 50 when he died by crashing his private airplane into a tree, getting spiked on a sharp branch. Daniel was born in a large villa in Den Haag as the son of the rich owner of a big medicine factory. His mother and father struggled to conceive. After years of trying, finally David was born. Later, he got a little sister, but both her and his mother died due to complications at birth. His father’s job inspired Daniel to study medicines. He finished his studies Cum Laude with a research into the efficiency of IVF. Afterwards he specialised in sorting out genetically healthy spermatids of sperm donors. When he became successful in his practice he decided to use this technique at his own spermatids of which some carried the genetic disorder Cystic Fibrosis. A disorder that can make men infertile. After his sorting, he was so proud of his super spermatids that he collected them in large quantities and used them for the insemination of women searching for a sperm donor. That is why there are many donor children in the Netherlands genetically connected to him. Although this has never been proven since his wife does not want to give genetic information from his body after he died. All of the notes written down by me are taken from my DNA code. In the piece two players represent my parents. &nbsp;It shows their influence on me by transitioning from strictly playing notes taken from my DNA code, to improvising in between the notes. This improvisation is done on prepared (different sounding) keys showing the difference between my “DNA notes” and the notes that my parents put in. Throughout the piece the amount of improvised notes increases showing the influence that parents have on a developing child. I listened to a lot of old recordings recorded when I was a little child. Many of these recordings are songs I sung with my parents. On the way stops are made at characteristic moments in history such as the first houses, the arrival of King Willem 1 and the current touristic international beach life.
